Riverside USD 114 is a 3A school located in the northeast corner of Kansas and includes the towns of Elwood and Wathena, which are approximately 4 miles apart. We are bordered by the Missouri River on the east, north and south, and the west border of the district extends to approximately 1 mile west of Blair. Both Elwood and Wathena have a variety of businesses, including a grocery store, a post office in each town, restaurants, a discount store, gas stations/convenience stores, flower/photography shop, a seasonal flower/statuary shop, mortgage business, insurance agents, a bank in each town, beauty salons, data processing business, two Chiropractic offices, heating & A/C services, body shops, plus other manufacturing businesses. St. Joseph MO borders the district on the east and Kansas City is 45 miles south of St Joseph, MO.
Riverside is a new district formed July 1, 2010 by the consolidation of Elwood USD 486 and Wathena USD 406. As of 2/20/2013, Riverside High School (Grades 9-12) and Riverside Primary (Grades Pre-K thru 2) are located at the West Campus, 705 Jessie, Wathena; and Riverside Intermediate and Junior High (Grades 3-8) are located at the East Campus, 203-04 North 12th, Elwood.
Our enrollment for the 12-13 school year is approximately 684 students. Riverside is a technology-rich district, with computers/laptops in every classroom. Smartboards and other up-to-date A/V equipment are used in many of the classrooms. We have two IDL Labs and two Computer Labs.
With consolidation, our high school curriculum has expanded and a greater variety of classes is offered.
