High School Students and High School Graduates


Every teacher in the state of Kansas must have a teaching license issued by the Kansas State Department of Education. The license is earned by completing an approved teacher preparation program. High school graduates and current students interested in becoming an educator in Kansas follow the traditional licensure path below:


Four-Year University Route

Step 1: Enter a four-year college or university
Step 2: Apply for a scholarship for future teachers if you need financial assistance. Learn more about scholarship opportunities
Step 3: Meet the eligibility requirements and apply for acceptance in an approved teacher preparation program.
Step 4: Enter an approved teacher preparation program. View a list of approved teacher preparation programs in Kansas
Step 5: Graduate and complete teacher preparation program
Step 6: Pass the Praxis content area test for the particular subject matter(s) you will be teaching View list of tests and passing requirements
Step 7: All applicants for an initial Kansas license must submit a fingerprint for KBI and FBI background checks. Request a fingerprint card and instructions
Step 8: Earn license from the Kansas Department of Education
Step 9: Begin teaching!

Community College Route
Step 1: Enter a two year college to complete core requirements or earn an associates degree
Step 2: Apply for a scholarship for future teachers if you need financial assistance. Learn more about scholarships
Step 3: Transfer to a four-year college or university
Step 4: Meet the eligibility requirements and apply for acceptance in an approved teacher preparation program.
Step 5: Enter accredited teacher preparation program. View a list of approved teacher preparation programs in Kansas
Step 6: Graduate and complete teacher preparation program
Step 7: Pass content area test for the particular subject matter(s) you will be teaching View list of tests and passing requirements
