Teachers Licensed Out-of-State

The number of initial licenses issued to out-of-state applicants nearly equaled the number of initial licenses issued to Kansas graduates in the 2006-07 school year. Kansas recognizes that our society is much more mobile and welcomes teachers from other states to join their education workforce. To obtain out-of-state licensure follow the steps below:

Did you complete a traditional route program to licensure (ex. 4 year approved teacher preparation program)?

If so follow the directions below:
Step 1: Visit the Kansas Department of Education website for the Teacher Education and Licensure (TEAL) department and download the Initial Out-of-State License Application. Click Here to Visit TEAL
Step 2: All applicants for an initial Kansas license must submit a fingerprint for KBI and FBI background checks. Request a fingerprint card and instructions

Did you complete an alternative route program to licensure?

If so follow the directions below:
Step 1: Contact the Kansas Department of Education Teacher Education and Licensure Division and ask to speak to a licensure consultant about the process for out-of-state alternate route program completers. (785) 296-2288
